Getting a Vehicle Through Gearheads

Cedar Valley Gearheads provides safe, reliable vehicles at no cost to individuals and families who have a demonstrated need for transportation. Because demand is high and vehicles are limited, we operate through a referral and waiting‑list process.

  • All applicants must be referred by a reputable social service agency, nonprofit organization, or church. We do not accept direct applications.

If you work with an agency or organization, please submit a referral using our Referral Form. Applications submitted without a referral will not be considered.

  • How the Process Works

    1. Referral received

Gearheads receives a referral from a local agency, organization, or church.

    2. Application sent

The referred individual is contacted and mailed a full application.

    3. Application review

Once the completed application is returned, we verify information and determine eligibility. Approved applicants are added to the waiting list.

    4. Waiting list

Wait times depend on the number of applicants and the availability of donated vehicles. Typical wait times are 12–18 months.

    5. Vehicle available

When a vehicle becomes available, the next eligible applicant is contacted.

    6. Sweat equity

Recipients are asked to complete 6 hours of volunteer service with Gearheads as part of the program.

    7. Vehicle transfer

The recipient must provide a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. The vehicle title is transferred to the recipient. Title and license fees are the responsibility of the recipient. No tax is due, as the vehicle is a gift.

  • Applicants must:

    • Demonstrate a genuine need for a vehicle

    • Show life stability

    • Hold a valid driver’s license

    • Have the ability to insure and maintain a vehicle

    • Live within a 25‑mile radius of Cedar Falls, Iowa

Failure to meet these requirements may result in denial or removal from the waiting list.

  • Cedar Valley Gearheads does not:

    • Repair privately owned vehicles

    • Pay for vehicle insurance

    • Help pay off vehicle loans

To serve the greatest number of people, our resources are focused exclusively on repairing donated vehicles that will be given to recipients through our established process.
